With the slump of the economy you have to do everything you can to stay relevant and start building your brand. The Windmill Networking Guide teaches you step by step how to utilize your LinkedIn account. I had a LinkedIn profile for a few years, but never did much with it, simply had my resume on it. However, after reading this book I learned that I have to be more active on the site in order to stand out. Still looking for that dream job, but I have definitely gotten some great leads. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for the next step in their career.

There are so many tools available on Linkedin that provide great value to its users. The trouble is that not all of them are intuitive. Furthermore, learning the nooks and crannies of Linkedin without guidance from Linkedin gurus like Neal takes an inordinate amount of time. Thanks to the techniques highlighted in this book, my Linkedin proficiency has skyrocketed. If you want to learn how to use Linkedin to its maximum capacity without having to pay for a premium account, read Neal’s book. Happy networking!

Like most people I’d created a basic linkedin profile that had the facts about who I was and what I’d done – then connected with friends and collegues and let it sit. Neal Shaffer’s book has opened my eyes to the power of creating a personal brand and marketing it in the web 2.0 world. His guide thru the linkedin application combines both the how behind functions and why these functions are key tools for branding your skills and marketing them to future employers and business associates. Additionally, Neal advocates throughout his book a genuine, authentic and pay it forward approach to self branding and networking. In these tough economic times – this is a positive book that encourages taking action to create a personal brand and unlock the power of linkedin.

I reside in Hong Kong and also a frequent traveler in the APAC region because of work, and here in this part of the world I have never found any reference book which is quite as thorough and useful as this one. Before reading this book I was an occassional user of Linkedin but now I can understand more the power of Linkedin, and appreciate how such social networking site can be helpful in terms of expanding my business connection, advertising myself and my expertise, and finally contributing to my business opportunities in general.
A thumb up to this one and highly recommend to any linkedin user (both beginner and advanced)

I chose the title like this becouse this is the mistake I have made. If I have had read the book just one month ago, I would never chose for the premium account. And this is what this book gives you, being able to get the most of Linkedin without paying anything for it. Spend the money on the book, and you will also get knowledge about personal branding and networking in general. Worth of reading it !

This book is a tremendous resource for anyone who wants to learn how to really use LinkedIn to their full advantage. Neal does a tremendous job of communicating on many levels: Beginners will find all of the information they need clearly presented (No more fear of approaching the Unknown!) and experts will doubtlessly find something new that they did not know about using this vitally important tool.
Neal talks about his personal journey in discovering LinkedIn’s through trial and error. I am so thankful that he invites his readers to discover the same things he did, but without the countless hours he spent in doing it.
But this book is about more than LinkedIn: It is about how to use LinkedIn as a platform to launch oneself into a whole new world of productive networking based, not on one’s self interest, but on promoting the best interest of others. In one of the wisest things I have ever read, Neal states, “A key to being successful is to refuse to limit yourself geographically nor to a narrow group of people you already know. For me, networking is a type of social insurance that everyone needs and you can never have enough of it… The more diverse your network is, the higher the liklihood that someone will give you advice for your particular situation.” His solution to this is based on helping others before you need their help.
I have read many books about networking: This one is THE BEST!

I am personally an investor & founder of a social network website – and i always thought i knew everything about social network. But after i read Neal’s book (Windmill Networking: Understanding, Leveraging & Maximizing LinkedIn), i realised there are so much more for me to learn. Neal explained in a very structured and step-by-step manner about LinkedIn and how one can leverage on its function to build real online contacts. For me it’s not so much about learning what functions/applications to use but it’s more how Neal makes you understand the true spirit of social networking. What i really learnt after reading this book? Do not expect anything from anyone and give as much as you can to anyone looking for you to help – you will be appreciated and rewarded at the end (this is pretty much karma). I could not agree less on what Neal said in his book. This is an excellent piece of work and I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to build a valuable brand online.

This book is not only an amazing guide on how to use LinkedIn, but it goes beyond that giving the reader the guidance to social networking. The reader will know why it is so important to grow your own social network and how to start networking. I have already read a couple books about social media and I have to say that this one was outstanding. It is well structured and easy to navigate. “Windmill Networking” is great for LinkedIn Beginners, but it also gives a lot of useful advice for those who want to benefit more from using LinkedIn.

This is by far my favorite Linkedin book. Neal not only briefly covers the basics in a very thorough and accessible way; he also- and this is where the work really shines- examines the more sophisticated elements of Linkedin, and explains the underlying logic that can anchor your knowledge. His (How, What, Why) explication on Linkedin groups is worth the price of the book alone. The strategies he presents here are invaluable in expanding your Linkedin branding efforts.
I also learned a lot about advanced profile creation, and the optimum usage of Linkedin Questions and advanced searching strategies. I have looked at other books and attended several costly webinars on Linkedin that usually promise more than they deliver and often are a rehashing of the basics. Buy, read, and reference this well laid out, well written, master work on Linkedin. You can save yourself hundreds of dollars and hours of frustration, and it the most current book out there, which is an essential element when considering information on the rapidly evolving Web 2.0, social media, landscape.
Neal says he is currently working on a new book on, the often cryptic and confusing, Twitter. I’m sure Neal will help his readers master that pesky platform as well as he does here with Linkedin.
