Unfortunately, for all the book provides, there are enough problems with it that I have to wonder if it missed out on some much-needed editing. The author’s describtive ability is extremly limited. Overall the book was very poor. Try something else and save your time and money.

Mr Davey’s background, candid advise and real world observations make this a very worthwhile read for anyone interested in entering the print market. The only detraction was the non-ending annoyance of poor editing/proofreading. Far too many errors in this area for a book that espouses the importance of making a good first impression and attention to detail.

  4. I recently finished reading this book and found it to be a fantastic resource for anyone who would like to sell art, whether that be original art, limited edition prints, open edition prints, posters, etc. Davey draws from many years at Decor magazine as an advertising sales rep, as well as someone who was involved with the trade shows that the parent company of Decor Magazine ran, including ArtExpo New York and ArtExpo Atlanta. He correctly notes how important these shows are for people to visit to get an idea about what type of work is selling (especially in the USA).

The tips offered for exhibitors at trade shows (supplied by another individual who he gives credit to) are excellent. I wish I had that list before I exhibited at ArtExpo NYC!

Just the weblinks given throughout the book of artists and many other helpful resources (and re-listed in the back of the book) are well worth the book’s cost.

Barney Davey’s honest commentary about the art world (from mom and pop frame shops to prestigious museums) and his willingness to express that there are exceptions to just about every rule and suggestion he offers, is both refreshing and entertaining.

As someone who has sold and licensed my photography for more than 10 years, I learned a lot about what goes on “behind closed doors” at galleries, frame shops, and magazine editorial and ad sales departments. Regardless of where you are on your journey to market and sell your artwork, I think you will benefit from this book.

  5. This book is great for one who is just starting out in the art print world. It is the beginning of the mental change toward success in art. I have found this book to be invaluable as it gives a great sprawling knowledge of the field. The author has “no shame in his game” in relation to finding money and skipping the”respect” of the fine art world. I would give it five stars if it gave some examples of business forms and documents, but I guess there are tons of tech books, and very few that shed light on other markets besides the gallery scene.
